Background and Development

The Health Coaching Quality Improvement System (HCQI) is a “coding” system developed specifically for internal quality improvement purposes to assess healthcare encounters between staff and patient. The HCQI was developed by HealthSciences Institute in 2013 and was validated against the Health Coaching Performance Assessment (HCPA) tool, which is restricted to users who are experts in motivational interviewing and MITI coding. For a more detailed description of the background and development process of the HCPA, please go to www.healthsciences.org/health-coaching-performance-assessment-HCPA.

There are five components of the HCQI Coding Tool Report:
I. Health Coach Behavior Counts and Global Characteristics
II. Patient Behaviors
III. MI Adherent and MI Non-Adherent Examples
IV. Strengths of Health Coaching Session
V. Recommended Skill-building Practice
